Paronella Park
Everytime I travel to Far North Queensland, I make an effort to pass through Mena Creek so I can go to this place - Paronella Park. Opened to the public in 1937, the site was hand-built by Spanish migrant, Jose' Paronella and his family. And when I say by hand, you can actually see Jose's fingerprints in concrete render on the different structures around the site.
Among the more remarkable things around the park is Queensland's first hydro-electric generator, installed in 1933. It fell into ruin over the intervening years but, in 2009, the current owners repaired and refurbished the generator so it is now electrically self-sufficient.
