Zierle & Carter @ the POP Gallery
In September 2012 I had the immense pleasure of documenting visiting international performance artists Alexandra Zierle & Paul Carter in their final days of residency at the POP Gallery at QCA Woolloongabba. They had been artists-in-residence at the Queensland College of Art for a period of time, but I only met up with them near the end of their stay at the exist@QCA event on 26 September.
We arranged to meet up for some one-on-one intensive creation sessions, with me as photographer/documentarian. I brought along my photo pal Mick Porter to help and offer an extra perspective on the second night, as well as my trusty 35mm Minolta. The photos in this gallery from the film camera (Minolta Dynax 500si with Sony 50mm f/1.4 lens and loaded with some cheap Kodak ULTRAMAX 400 colour negative film) are the ones with white borders around the frame.
The first installation we documented this night was the lipstick/window piece. After a short break, and Mick left for home, we set up inside the gallery with a complicated set of elements displayed in front of a mirror. Not only was that one challenging due to the lighting and layout, but working in a damn mirror completely did my head in for a period of time that felt like hours. But we got it done and the results, I believe, speak for themselves.
On the last night we spent a heap of time setting up in the middle of Main Rd, Woolloongabba for one shot. It wasn't the safest working environment we could have hoped for - especially for Alexandra - but we got everything we needed and wound up with a great final image.
All in all it was a great artistic experience and I definitely came away from the sessions with a revitalised spirit.

This installation ended under the big tree outside the Gabba with some words followed by silent meditation.
